Fixing Cavities with Tooth-Colored Fillings

fixing cavities with tooth-colored fillingsSince cavities can and do affect nearly everybody at some point in their lives, dental fillings (the most common treatment for cavities) are vital to the health of many patients’ smiles. The good news is that, if you do have a cavity, you may not have to rely on a metal amalgam filling, which is not only noticeable but can be prone to failure in the long-run. Instead, we offer tooth-colored fillings made from an advanced composite resin so you can fix a cavity without sacrificing your smile’s uniform appearance.

A Look at a Tooth Decaying

Inside the plaque that occasionally clings to your teeth are numerous types of oral bacteria, some of which produce acids that attack the enamel protecting your teeth. Poor hygiene and unhealthy eating habits can contribute to excessive bacteria, plaque, and acid production, and over time, your enamel will grow too weak to protect your teeth. Eventually, the bacteria will bypass the damaged enamel and infect the body of your tooth (dentin), a condition known as tooth decay. As the infection spreads, it will leave a hole, commonly called a cavity, which will grow larger the longer it is left untreated.

How a Dental Filling Works

Unfortunately, your tooth cannot grow back the enamel and dentin that is lost to tooth decay. Fortunately, however, a dental filling can often restore mild to moderate cavities while simultaneously protecting the exposed, sensitive tooth structure. After thoroughly cleaning the cavity and ensuring that no bacteria or infection remain, we will fill the cavity with tooth-colored composite resin. A mixture of acrylic and finely-ground quartz particles, resin closely matches your tooth’s natural appearance, and once hardened, creates a formidable seal against infectious oral bacteria.
